Online search is changing. Google shows AI-generated answers at the top of some results pages, and millions of people ask their questions directly to ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Claude. For a business, the question is simple: how do you stay visible?

What changes

  • Direct answers: for many simple questions, users get an answer without clicking on a website.
  • Less room for links on some informational queries.
  • New entry points: AI assistants are becoming a channel in their own right, quoting a few sources or brands.
  • New vocabulary: people talk about GEO ("generative engine optimization") for the work of being visible in generative engines.

What does not change

  • Generated answers rely on web pages. For recent or local questions, assistants query search engines and websites, then summarise.
  • Well-ranked sites remain the main sources. Good classic SEO increases the chances of being read and quoted.
  • Quality is still decisive: useful, precise, up-to-date content written by people who know the subject.
  • Links and reputation still count: being mentioned by other serious sites strengthens engines' trust.

How to stay visible

1. Answer questions clearly

Build your pages around real questions, with direct answers at the start of each section. Generative engines reuse a clear answer more easily than vague text.

2. Be precise and verifiable

Give concrete, dated information, with sources where possible. Avoid vague or exaggerated claims.

3. Get the technical side right

Fast pages, accessible to crawlers, structured data (schema.org), an up-to-date sitemap. Content that crawlers cannot read will be neither ranked nor quoted.

4. Build your brand

Assistants remember brands that are often mentioned in reliable contexts. Being quoted in articles, comparisons and sites in your industry helps.

5. Measure in both worlds

Track your Google rankings, but also your presence in AI assistants' answers to your customers' questions.

One strategy, not two

SEO and AI visibility are not opposites. What makes a site useful, clear and recognised serves both. The businesses that invest in quality content and a solid web presence are the ones assistants quote.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEO dead because of AI?

No. AI assistants largely rely on well-ranked pages. SEO is evolving, but it remains the foundation of visibility.

What is GEO?

It is the work of being well understood and quoted by generative engines such as ChatGPT or Perplexity. It rests on the same foundations as SEO: clear, reliable, well-structured content.

How do I know whether AI tools mention my company?

Ask assistants your customers' questions and note the brands they mention, regularly and across several tools.
